Deaf West Lancashire: Empowering the Local Deaf Community

Deaf West Lancashire, founded in 2023, is a vital initiative supporting the Deaf and hearing-impaired community across the region. The project was born out of personal experience when Tracey Chamberlain, a teacher in training, began losing her hearing in 2022. Facing numerous challenges navigating life as a Deaf person, she realised the urgent need for better support services.

Losing her hearing dramatically altered Tracey’s life. Socialising became difficult, she could no longer enjoy music, and she was unable to hear her daughter sing. Everyday tasks, such as using the telephone, became impossible, forcing her to rely on family and diminishing her independence.

One of the biggest struggles Tracey faced was accessing healthcare. Communication barriers, a severe shortage of interpreters, and difficulties with GP appointments highlighted the lack of support for Deaf individuals. Shockingly, 70% of Deaf people avoid medical visits due to interpreter issues.

Determined to bring change, Tracey set up Deaf West Lancashire to bridge these gaps. Despite there being over 22,500 Deaf or hearing-impaired people in the region, local services are extremely limited. The nearest Deaf centres are often too far to travel, leaving many without crucial support.

Deaf West Lancashire now offers essential services, including Deaf awareness training, basic sign language courses, and assistance in finding local services. The initiative also plans to tackle mental health challenges, isolation, and dementia, which disproportionately affect Deaf individuals.

Beyond providing direct support, Tracey is passionate about creating a more inclusive society. She advocates for British Sign Language (BSL) education in schools, believing early exposure benefits both hearing and Deaf children. Educating employers, schools, and the wider community about Deaf culture is a key part of her mission.

Through Tracey’s efforts, Deaf West Lancashire is working to break down communication barriers and foster a sense of belonging, empowerment, and opportunity for everyone, regardless of hearing ability. Her vision is clear: to ensure that no one in the Deaf community feels isolated or unsupported.
