Join About the Town as we celebrate the appointment of Julian Finch as West Lancashire’s new Mayor. Julian’s journey to the role is marked by resilience, faith, and an unwavering commitment to youth and community development. Julian’s life was profoundly shaped after a traumatic event that led him to hit the lowest point in his life. Shortly after, Julian found himself falling back on the faith he’d grown up in, and this faith soon became the cornerstone of his career, guiding him through personal recovery and a career devoted to helping others.

For over 45 years, Julian has been deeply involved in youth work and community development. His passion for empowering young people is evident in his extensive experience, including a memorable project with the YMCA. Julian led groups of teens to Eastern Europe, providing them with transformative experiences that highlighted the importance of service and the realities of underdeveloped regions. This initiative not only broadened the horizons of the young participants but also reinforced Julian’s commitment to creating meaningful opportunities for youth.

In 2016, Julian’s desire to create change on a broader scale led him into politics. Armed with postgraduate qualifications in Education, Youth Work, Management and Social Enterprise, he brings a blend of academic knowledge and hands-on experience to his new role. Julian emphasises that his journey would not have been possible without the support of his faith and his lovely wife, Mary. As Mayor, Julian is enthusiastic about fostering community spirit and positive influence among residents.

He aims to learn and grow in his role, seeing it as an opportunity to become an even more effective advocate for the community. His tenure will support local causes, including ERooms, a local not-for-profit community arts centre, music school and cafe, and Friends of Little Digmoor School who will work with other groups to develop Youth work and out-of-school activities for children and young people in need.. A highlight of his mayoral year will be the annual Mayor’s Ball, a community event that promises to celebrate the spirit of West Lancashire. Stay tuned for more details!
