From Fan to Opponent: Skelmersdale’s Josh Woods’ Dream FA Cup Date with Liverpool

It’s not every day you meet your heroes, let alone face them in a competitive match. For Skelmersdale’s Josh Woods, a lifelong Liverpool fan, that dream became reality in the FA Cup’s 3rd round.

Woods, who played non-League football at Marine and Clay Brow FC before moving to Accrington Stanley in League Two, had the chance of a lifetime when his side took on Liverpool at Anfield. Despite Stanley’s 4-0 defeat to the Premier League giants—86 places above them in the football pyramid—it was a day he’ll never forget.

Playing in front of over 60,000 fans, with family and friends in attendance, made the occasion even more special. Woods came close to an unforgettable moment when his second-half shot hit the crossbar. Before and after the match, he met some of his idols, including Liverpool legend Robbie Fowler and current stars Trent Alexander-Arnold and manager Arne Slot.

Although he missed out on Alexander-Arnold’s shirt, he was told an effort would be made to get one for him. Reflecting on the experience, Woods said, “Seeing my friends and family was special for me. It’s probably been the best day of my life to date.”

Despite the result, it was a momentous occasion for Woods and his loved ones, proving that dreams do come true. A lifelong fan stepping onto Anfield’s pitch—it doesn’t get much better than that!
