It’s full steam ahead for Skelmersdale author Susan Brownrigg with the publication of her new children’s book!

Susan, from Tanhouse, told About the Town: “Wrong Tracks is inspired by a real Lancashire lad, Edward Entwistle, who claimed he drove the famous steam locomotive Rocket at the opening of the Liverpool & Manchester Railway.

“In my book, aimed at children aged 9+, Edward is hired by inventor George Stephenson to help protect the engine and finds himself caught up in a thrilling mystery with his new friend, Prudence. Their adventure takes them to the Rainhill Trials, a gripping competition which sees the steam locomotive engines designers doing everything they can to win the £500 prize and a contract for the engine to run on the new line.

“Edward and his new loco-mad friend Prudence soon realise someone is trying to scupper the Stephensons’ chances. It is up to the friends to spot sabotage and chase down spies in a thrilling race against the clock!”

Susan’s book is published on January 9th, just in time for the start of the 200th anniversary of railways celebrations.

Susan said: “George Stephenson is often called the Father of the Railways as he was so important in their early development, including building Locomotion No1 which ran on the Stockton & Darlington Line. He and his son, Robert, were convinced that steam engines were the future at a time when people travelled by foot or by horse. We perhaps take for granted that railways now crisscross the globe, but for my character, Edward this was a hugely exciting time. People were afraid of these new engines, saying they would blow up and terrify cows in the fields!”

Susan is hoping her book will be popular with steam train fans of all ages. She added: “I have had so much fun researching this book. I have been able to see the real Rocket at Locomotion in Shildon and have travelled on the running replica there. I have also had two footplate experiences where I was able to see how a steam engine works up close just like Edward and Prudence.

“Wrong Tracks is perfect for teachers looking for a book with a STEM connection and I will be offering themed talks workshops to Skelmersdale schools.”
