M.A.T.E.S – Men and their emotions support Group
M.A.T.E.S is a brand-new community interest company based here in Skelmersdale that was set up to help improve the well-being and mental health of men in West Lancashire.
M.A.T.E.S founders, Ben Joyce and Mikey Wright, believe that within society, it is often taught to males at a young age that showing emotions, getting upset, feeling depressed, and/or anxious is the norm, and that they should man up and deal with it. They also believe it’s time to change this.
They aim to create an environment where men feel safe and confident to share their problems and worries. They want men to feel comfortable to socialise in a safe environment away from tempting addictive environments. In addition, they aim to try and eliminate isolation and help men communicate and help each other.
The organisation wants to signpost to other relevant organisations that can help men deal with problems they may be facing, and Mates have partnered with many organisations in Skelmersdale already.
They hope to grow throughout Lancashire and the North West, and eventually set up a women’s and young persons group too.
This service is much needed as the statistics are shocking when it comes to male suicide rates; in September 2020, the male suicide rate was at the highest rate in two decades.
The guys here want you to know they’ve got your back!
M.A.T.E.S meets every week at Vito’s Cafe in Digmoor and is a free session. Refreshments are provided. Join the M.A.T.E.S group on Facebook for updates.
