Staying Connected This Winter

As the nights draw in, many people across West Lancashire feel the effects of social isolation, especially older and vulnerable residents. Loneliness isn’t just emotional; it’s linked to serious health risks. Studies show that isolation increases the risk of heart disease by 29%, stroke by 32% and dementia by 25%. Around 940,000 older people in the UK say they are “often lonely,” with 270,000 going a week without speaking to anyone.

Winter also worsens fuel poverty and food insecurity. Over 11% of UK households are classed as fuel poor, and nearly 9 million spend more than 10% of their income on energy. When heating or food becomes unaffordable, people are less likely to go out or socialise, deepening the cycle of isolation.

At About the Town, we believe that connection helps keep communities healthy, and that’s why our doors are open Wednesday through Saturday. You are always welcome, and you don’t need to spend any money to enjoy our free library, games, and pool table. Our Community Cuppa sessions run every Friday, 10 am-12 pm, offering free hot drinks, toast, and company. Everyone is welcome, it’s a great way to meet neighbours and share a friendly chat. If you’re in need of some emergency food and hygiene supplies, our Community Cupboard is open to anyone struggling, and don’t forget other local groups like Birchwood, Social Wellbeing CIC, The Evermore Hub and Pulse, who also work tirelessly to support residents facing hardship or loneliness.

This winter, you can make a difference by:

  • Checking in on someone who lives alone.
  • Inviting a neighbour for tea or a walk.
  • Sharing information about local support groups.

Together, we can make sure no one in West Lancashire feels forgotten. Pop in to About the Town Central anytime and let’s keep our community connected, warm, and cared for this winter.
