What is Rotary, and why does it matter to our local community?

Rotary has been a global force for good for more than a century, bringing people together to create positive change locally and internationally. In Skelmersdale and Upholland, the Skelmersdale and Upholland Rotary Club has become a source of connection, collaboration, and practical support for residents across the area.

Over the past three years, this dedicated group of volunteers has focused on making a tangible difference. Initiatives include supporting children in local schools through reading programmes, helping to build literacy, confidence, and meaningful moments of connection in the classroom. These efforts, though often quiet, have lasting benefits for both the children and the wider community.

Beyond schools, the club’s work reaches people of all ages. A highlight has been funding and organising About the Town’s Warm Welcome Week. Working alongside local groups, the Rotary Club helped provide hats, gloves, socks, hot water bottles, and draught excluders to residents in need. For a full week, the club covered the cost of a hot drink and toast for anyone in the community at About the Town Central’s coffee shop, offering a warm space to relax, chat, and feel a sense of belonging during the winter months.

The club also supports charities, community projects, and families facing hardship, ensuring vulnerable or isolated residents know they are seen and supported. Through volunteering, fundraising, and practical help, the club creates a ripple effect of positive change across West Lancashire.
