The Skelmersdale Young Writers Competition: A review from the winning school – Holland Moor

Holland Moor Primary School welcomed a special guest in February as local author Susan Brownrigg paid a visit to inspire the next generation of writers. The school buzzed with excitement as Ms. Brownrigg shared her experiences as an author and engaged the students in a captivating discussion about her literary journey.

During her forty-five-minute presentation, Ms. Brownrigg offered a glimpse into the life of an author, detailing the joys and challenges of bringing stories to life on paper. With infectious enthusiasm, she recounted her adventures in crafting characters, weaving plots, and navigating the publishing industry, captivating the imaginations of the young audience.

The highlight of the visit came when Ms. Brownrigg had the pleasure of presenting an award to Faye Crowley who is a talented student at Holland Moor Primary. Faye was honoured for her exceptional writing skills, having clinched the prestigious Skelmersdale About the Town Magazine’s young writers’ competition. The hall erupted in applause as Faye received her well-deserved recognition, with her peers beaming with pride at her achievement.

“It was such a pleasure to visit Holland Moor Primary and meet the bright and inquisitive students,” remarked Ms. Brownrigg. “Their enthusiasm for storytelling was inspiring, and I thoroughly enjoyed answering their brilliant questions. It’s heart-warming to see such talent and creativity flourishing in our community.”

The children at Holland Moor Primary were enthralled by Ms. Brownrigg’s presentation, eagerly absorbing her insights into the writing process and expressing their admiration for her literary accomplishments. For many, the visit served as a source of motivation to pursue their own passions for writing and storytelling. Many pupils also chose to purchase one or more of Ms Brownrigg’s novels.

“We were thrilled to host Ms. Brownrigg at our school today,” said head teacher Mike Beale. “Her visit not only provided valuable insights into the world of literature but also celebrated the remarkable talent of one of our own students.
