With the cost of living on the rise, we decided to do some digging to see how we can help you save money…

On April 1st 2022, the energy price cap went up by 54%, equating to nearly £700 a year more on the typical household bill. However, we live in strange times, and price-capped variable tariffs are now some of the cheapest deals available.

Unfortunately, there is very little we can do in terms of getting a cheaper deal; however, the Government has said it will make up to £350 per household available. In addition to this, there will be a £144m discretionary fund for councils aimed at those on low incomes who don’t qualify for the £150 council tax rebate.

British Gas offers some helpful advice on their website. In December 2021, they invested £2m into grants to help their vulnerable customers. This year, they’ve increased this by another £2m.

Martin Lewis, Money Savings Expert, has also developed a ‘survival kit’ which details 90 ways to beat the price hikes. Below is a selection of his top picks:

Heat the human, not the home. Mr Lewis suggests that it may be cheaper to use various devices to keep yourself warm such as electric blankets, electric heat pads, and hot water bottles are recommended as more affordable alternatives.

If you have to choose between eating and heating, speak to your local authority. Councils have been given £500m for the Household Support Fund to help provide support with their essential costs.

On the minimum wage? Check you’re not being underpaid. An estimated half a million minimum-wage employees have been underpaid without knowing!

People of state pension age or those with severe disabilities who need a carer can apply for an Attendance Allowance. This is often overlooked, but those eligible can get an extra £60-£89.60 a week! Plus, it’s not means-tested.

Some general saving tips include:

Get organised. Figure out your outgoings and incomings. Perhaps make a spreadsheet?

Short on fresh food? The Birchwood has its community shop four days a week, and everything is on a pay as you feel basis. They also have a community cafe with the same structure.

Create spending plans and have targets; even if you save a few pounds per week, it will help when things like birthdays and Christmas pop up.

Fancy a treat? Why not download the App called ‘TooGoodtoGo’. Local businesses such as Gracious Grub, Greggs, Starkbucks, Asda to Go, Toby Carvery, Subway, and so many more offer ‘Magic Bags’ from just a few pounds with close to sell-by date items full of goodies!

Keep your eyes peeled for any money-off coupons, deals, etc.
