A Paw-sitive Milestone: Celebrating a Year of Sash & Pepps Pet Shop
What began as a modest market stall in the Market Hall at the Concourse Shopping Centre in 2023 has since blossomed into one of Skelmersdale’s most beloved pet supply shops. Sash and Pepps, founded by brother-and-sister duo Scott and Lauren Davies, has grown rapidly, fuelled by community support, a passion for pets, and a clear gap in the market for high-quality products.
It wasn’t long before their popularity outgrew the stall. By 2024, rising demand and an ever-expanding product range meant it was time to take the next big step. The team moved upstairs into a larger, more spacious unit, giving them the room to stock even more of the products their customers, and their pets, love.
The idea behind Sash and Pepps was rooted in personal experience. Disappointed by the limited and often unhealthy options available in supermarkets, Scott and Lauren wanted to create something better: a space where quality and care came first. Fittingly, the business is named after their two cherished dogs.
Jodie Davies joined the team not long after the business began and quickly became an integral part of it. She shares Scott and Lauren’s passion for giving pets the best possible care and nutrition.
“Our mission has always been simple,” she says. “We want every pet to be treated like part of the family.”
Originally launched online, Sash and Pepps faced a slow start digitally. But instead of giving up, the team changed direction.
“The Concourse felt like the perfect fit,” Jodie explains. “We liked the area, the busy footfall, the friendly customers, and the management team were incredibly supportive. They made everything feel smooth and welcoming.”
The move from online to physical retail proved to be a smart one. Jodie believes the success is down to the personal touch.
“People still like to see what they’re buying,” she says. “They want to talk to someone and ask questions—it makes a big difference.”
Moving out of the Market Hall, however, wasn’t easy.
“It was tough leaving,” Jodie admits. “But we’d outgrown it. Still, it gave us the chance to build strong relationships with other stallholders, and we always felt part of a close-knit community.”
Customer care has always been at the heart of the business.
“We’ll never recommend a product just to make a sale,” Jodie says. “We offer a personalised service and take the time to find out what’s right for each pet and their owner. Times are tough, and we’d rather be honest than push something someone doesn’t need.”
That ethos has built a loyal following. Even during slower periods, customers still drop by for essentials or just to show their support.
“The relationships we’ve formed with people are honestly the best part of the job,” says Jodie. “Those little visits and kind words keep us going.”
Though winter brings quieter days, the team remains optimistic. Their first year in the shop has been full of learning, growth, and gratitude.
“We’ve had so many positive experiences,” Jodie reflects. “We’re really grateful for the lovely people who keep coming back.”
Looking ahead, the team is already dreaming bigger.
“We want to stay in the Concourse,” she says with a smile. “We’ve built something really special here: a loyal customer base and great relationships with other businesses. We’re already thinking about moving into a bigger unit so we can cater to even more pets and their owners.”
