A story of challenges, resilience and gratitude…

Skelmersdale resident Rachel Lynch welcomed her son George into the world towards the end of 2023, but his arrival was accompanied by the shadow of sepsis, necessitating treatment for suspected meningitis and multiple lumbar punctures. George’s early days were spent in and out of hospitals battling infections, relying on antibiotics to aid his recovery. However, thanks to the dedicated care of Ormskirk Hospital’s Neonatal Unit, George is now on the road to recovery, his infectious smile once again lighting up the room.

Moved by her nephew’s journey, Rachel’s sister, Emma, embarked on a remarkable fundraising mission to express gratitude to the Neonatal Unit. Throughout February and March this year, Emma undertook the monumental challenge of walking an astounding 200 miles, equivalent to completing 7.5 marathons, regardless of the unpredictable weather. Emma’s determination paid off, raising an impressive £1005.

Reflecting on her journey, Emma shared, “I spent 60 hours walking, enduring snow, hail, rain, and wind – it was tough, especially in February. But every step was for George!”

Among the treatments George received was phototherapy, delaying his mother’s opportunity to hold him until he was two days old. The funds raised will contribute towards UV blankets, allowing new parents the vital chance to bond skin-to-skin with their babies.
