Clare Johnson, founder of ‘Skelmersdale Find a Book’, tells us how her community focused scheme engaged over a thousand people from Skelmersdale to share the love of books…

“Hi, I’m Clare!  I set up my little online book shop in June 2019 with Usborne books.  Being part of the Usborne brand has really helped me build my company, since the brand is already a well-loved and long established publisher of children’s and young adults’ books.  I retail these books through my Facebook page and my website, and, because I’m part of Usborne, I can offer big discounts to schools and nurseries.  

I’ve always had a love for books and I’m so glad my daughter does too.  She has just turned two and loves nothing more than sitting with me or her dad for a good story.  I truly believe this helps parents and children to bond, and it is an important part of our bedtime routine.   This is where the inspiration for the name of my Facebook page, ‘Amy’s Amazing Stories’, came from – after my beautiful, book-loving daughter, Amy!

Last summer, I started up the ‘Skelmersdale Find a Book’ scheme.  It was great fun and the community of Skelmersdale really got behind it.  With over a thousand members in the group, it proved just what the town needed!  I’m looking to do it all again this year and hopefully we can have even more people joining in!  Last year, lots of local businesses supported me by donating a little money for me to buy more books to hide around Skelmersdale.  This was brilliant for me as a small business, and in return, I advertised their businesses in the group!  Working together to create a community spirit is exactly what ‘Find a Book’ scheme, is about!”
