Introducing About the Town’s flash fiction Competition!

What is flash fiction?  

Flash fiction is a genre of fiction that is very similar to a short story, however the word count is much smaller.  This allows the writer to focus more on the meaning of the story, and how it will affect the reader.  Flash fiction can be a fun way to create a piece of writing that is punchy, thought provoking and to the point.

How to write flash fiction in 7 steps:

Step 1 – Think of an idea. Most genres work well with flash fiction. However, if you are thinking of creating a brand-new world, for example in the sci-fi genre, proceed with care.  You have to fit everything into your tight word budget and that can be a difficult task.  My top tip for beginners is to write about what you know; this makes it easier to create a story that will connect with your reader.

Step 2 – Create one or two characters and decide on your setting. Are your characters human, alien, animal etc.?  Create strong imagery of the scene as this will help bring your story to life. 

Step 3 – Great stories have a beginning, a middle and an end, and flash fiction is no different.  However, with flash fiction you need to create a complete story in a minimal word count.  The best way to do this is by sticking to one scene for the entire story.  

Step 4 – Consider writing it in first person: This will help create an instant connection to your reader.

Step 5 – Decide what the conflict is: Conflict is required in order to bring the story to life.  It can be as simple as missing the bus, and what that means for the character.  If you’re new to this, just keep it simple!

Step 5 – The end: Flash fiction works best when you surprise your reader and make them think deeply about what it all means. 

Step 6 – The title: Don’t forget to give it a punchy title, these extra few words can make a big impact!

Step 7 – Havefun! You don’t have to be an experienced writer to give this a go!
