Looking Back, Focusing Forward – A review of 2022 by ATT’s Co-Editor, Andy.

A new year brings new dreams, targets, and goals for many people, whether it’s to set up a new business, learn a new skill or to travel more.

For me personally, 2022 was a good year both in terms of my mental and physical health and work opportunities. As you know, I came to work for About the Town in March on a voluntary basis after being advised by the Social Prescribing team to get in touch with Bev, our Founder and Editor. Prior to this, I had been having major bouts of depression and anxiety, feeling unworthy and having self-doubts.

One of the things that we are big advocates of at About the Town is mental health, and we have written a lot of content discussing the issue as well as hosting mental health awareness events. Creating these articles and holding the events has encouraged me to talk in greater depth about my own struggles with mental health.

I have developed so much in many ways on a personal and professional level. My confidence and self-esteem have improved massively, and I have improved the skills that I’ve acquired throughout my academic life and other work experiences.

Not only this, but I have added to my skill set. I now assist with copywriting for our social media, and I’ve even had a bash at some design work. I also help with our community events, which means my role has become more significant within the business.

I’m often referred to as Bev’s right-hand man, which gives me a great sense of purpose. It’s nice for me to know that I’m thought of as capable, trustworthy and valued.

Working for About the Town has also enabled me to become more expressive and to learn how to become more creative with my writing. As a result, I decided to have a go at writing poetry which many people have reacted positively to.

On many occasions since joining the team, I’ve said it’s the best decision I ever made. I still stand by that statement. From day one, I understood Bev’s vision for the community here in Skelmersdale, and I believe in it even more so now, so I want to match her ambition and make About the Town the best it can be in 2023.
