Exploring Skelmersdale Through a Lens: Local Photography Exhibition at the Ecumenical Centre

Nestled in the heart of Skelmersdale lies a hidden treasure: its natural beauty. From the rolling landscapes of the Beacon to the rich wildlife of Tawd Valley Park, the town’s green spaces offer a haven for both nature lovers and photographers.

This beauty was the inspiration behind a recent photography exhibition hosted at the Ecumenical Centre, curated by Cllr John Fillis and Centre Manager Paul McConnell. Running for seven weeks, it celebrated Skelmersdale’s landscapes and local talent.

Three local photographers — David Gibson, Danny Jackson, and Barry Ryder — eagerly captured and shared the town’s charm. After being approached about the idea, David pitched it to Barry and Danny, who jumped at the opportunity to showcase their pride in their hometown.

“You only have to walk ten minutes from my house and you’re at Beacon Country Park,” says Barry. “The beauty here is incredible — from wildlife to stunning views of landmarks like Blackpool Tower.”

If you look closely, Skelmersdale is alive with wildlife: owls, deer, foxes and more — many of which have graced the covers of this very magazine, thanks to David’s lens.

The exhibition’s themes also touched on Liverpool, where many local families have roots, celebrating both heritage and artistry.

Looking ahead, plans are already in motion for future creative events, including an upcoming art exhibition, ensuring Skelmersdale’s creative spirit continues to flourish.
