Kids Get Creative Over Lockdown

In April, we launched our Creative Writing Competition on Facebook in partnership with Amy’s Amazing Stories, and asked children from three age groups to submit and piece of writing that had the theme of ‘POSITIVITY.

Each winner from the age groups won a £10 voucher to spend in Amy’s Amazing Stories book shop!  They were also promised that their amazing work would be published in the Summer edition of our magazine!  So here it goes…

Age Group 3 – 5 Years

The winning entry was written by Stanley age 4, Iona age 5, and Jack age 6, who worked together to create this fabulously unique story about a cat named Toffee!  Our panel thought this piece deserved to win because the three children worked so well together to create it!

Once Upon a time there was a cat, it was nice and fluffy.  It was Orange.  It was called Toffee. 

Toffee crashed into a big castle.  After the crash at the castle he went to watch Barcelona and Real Madrid.  Then he went to buy new sunglasses.  

After all that Toffee was hungry.  He went back to the castle and found a big garden.  He saw a BBQ and he wanted some hotdogs and burgers.  Toffee grew some vegetables to eat with his hotdogs and burgers. 

After he ate his BBQ he was super full and felt tired.  He saw a door and opened the door and saw a big bed. Toffee said to himself “I might stay here for 7 days”.  Toffee fell asleep and then after his nap he woke up and it was all a dream and he had a big purr.

Age Group 6 – 8 Years

The Winner was James Mannion, aged 8.  Our panel just loved his poem, it had us all close to happy tears!  We thought it was just what Skelmersdale needed to hear!  The poem is called ‘Stay Positive’.

If you are feeling blue

Find something you like to do

Sing out loud for all to hear

That might help spread some cheer

If you are feeling sad

Think about the good times you’ve had

Hopefully they will make you smile

And make you happy for a while

If you are feeling down

Do your best not to frown

Take a bath or a shower

Have a nap for half an hour

If you are feeling teary

And noticed you are feeling weary

Try some exercise or a hobby

Maybe even walk your doggy

If you are feeling low

Like you have nowhere to go

Just know I’ll always be your friend

We will stick together until the end.

Age 9 Years +

This winning entry came from Lucy aged 6, and Mia aged 9, and is a lovable story about when they brought their cat Rico home for the first time.  Our panel enjoy reading this story of love and what home means to these two girls who worked hard together to create this piece.

We will never forget the day our mummy brought home the most beautiful kitten we have ever seen, we called him Rico.  Rico was so beautiful, he had big blue eyes and he was fluffy like a teddy.  Rico was so scared of us and hissed at us all the time, but he’d never seen a child before, then there was Mia and Lucy.  We just ignored him and pampered him.  We both sang to him, we played with him a lot.

Rico eventually started enjoying being with us, he cried for our attention all the time.  He loves cuddles off mummy and daddy when we had to go to bed.

Our Rico has grown up to be our cat brother, he is our best friend, he plays with us all the time and gets in our pram.  When we are tired he cuddles with us.  Rico is the best ragdoll cat ever.  My family love him so much and I am sure Rico loves us too.

A massive well done and congratulations to all the children who won!  I’m sure the people of Skelmersdale will enjoy reading your poems and stories as much as we did!
